cool iphone app to improve frequency and altered tone/noise recognition
I read a review about an iphone app called quiztones (Audiofile Engineering Releases Quiztones iOS App | BriefingRoom on Electronic Musician).
Audiofile Engineering - Quiztones
The website contains the following description:
"Quiztones is a frequency identification ear training app for amateur and professional audio engineers and musicians. Quiztones uses frequency-altered tones, noise and musical loops to train your ears and help develop more acute listening and frequency recognition skills.
Sharpen your ears & frequency recognition skills
Improve your mixing and EQ chops
Prevent noise buildup in your mixes & recordings
Eliminate the need to sweep for frequencies
"
This is not a free app and I have no connection to this app at all, this is purely my finding a cool tool and wanting to share it. There are sub-upgrades as well, which I always hate in an app. I have not purchased any additional upgrades at this point.
I had extensive ear training when getting my music degree. I could easily recognize intervals, chords, voicings, progressions, etc. Now, in the world of home studios and DAW's, the mixing has always been elusive to me (and still is...). This app teaches you to recognize frequencies as well as altered frequencies to a recording. It's not easy to do. It will take practice. I can already feel an improved ear after using this tool. If you have the time and the patience and interest, you may want to look into it.

Re: cool iphone app to improve frequency and altered tone/noise recognition
There is also another app like this called Ear Tuner which is similar to QuizTones but a little cheaper (not that anything is expensive on the app store). These apps actually do a lot for your ears and I would highly recommend them for both studio and experienced audio engineers.
It doesn't look like Ear Tuner has a website but you can check out the app here:
App Store - Ear Tuner
