Default Comments please

wondering if any audiophile aspiring music lover has used a Sony Play Station 1 as a CD player through quality gear and has been impressed with sound. I have just read another write up in Stereophile where the reviewer has been blown-away by the quality of this now $25 player. Though the player tests poorly the sound well exceeds expectations (and test results). Does the latest PS exceed it's legendary grandfather or was the PS1 one of a kind?

Comments please.

For the most part, a CD player is a CD player....plays CD formatted at 44.1Kbps / 16-bit.

Question is: what speakers/monitors are you listening with?

I have actually read about the ps1 cd player supposedly being a good sounding unit.
I also heard that you need to let it w.a.r.m up for 24 hours or so before using it to allow for the components to reach optimal temperature.

Never actually tried it, can't imagine that they put top notch d/a converters into it.

That's a good point. It's possible for gaming audio that they may have some decent D/A converters.

The Phillips chip was a hot item at one time. The only cd player I ever bot had that chip - from around '82. I can't remember if it was the typical Sony/Phillips development, or not.
