All I know is that every band I've ever been in started the song at one tempo, and ended it at another tempo - usually faster. When I heard some of our live recordings, I cringed because it sounded like a runaway train. The vocal feel was ruined as a result.

Vocals being ruined is just one of many problems that occur with a band that isn't grooving, but just speeding along.
I used tempo maps on a couple of the songs on the last record I produced because I wanted the tempo moving around, but I did it in a way where it complimented the music (and didn't hurt it).
The people that are die hard anti-click track are either MEGA GREAT musicians who have outstanding timing that is better than most session players or they simply aren't aware of the damage done when a band doesn't groove.
Some people I know hate playing to a click. That's because they equate "fun" with playing faster than the drummer. When they actually have to react to the drummer, they get uncomfortable.

Have you seen bill hicks Revelations. It's one of his dvds. I think its his best performance and one of the best Stand-up closings ever.

I watched a DVD last month, but I don't know the name. He was in Montreal. He had some jokes that were so mindblowing that no one in the crowd laughed. Of course, this makes if funnier now. I'm not sure what it meant back in the early 90s.
