Exclamation Buying a Voc. Mic

Hi

So I'm thinking about buying a vocal microphone, cos i have a shure sm58 which is a dynamic if i recall correctly....and i want better sound for my vocals...which means i need a condenser microphone ....

So if you have propositions for a guy who has a reallly basic home made studio and his looking for a basic condenser microphone. Not too expensive...I'm really looking for a quality/price type of mic

Thanks in advance!

alex

oh and also, if som1 could explain me the difference between a dynamic and a condenser mic and why do we use condenser to record vocals?...that would be appreciated

I've been pretty happy with this inexpensive condenser here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CAD-GXL3000-Cond...QQcmdZViewItem

Here is a nice writeup on how a condenser works:

http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/mi...condenser.html

Same source has this to say about dynamic mics:

http://www.mediacollege.com/audio/mi...s/dynamic.html

I don't think it is a given that a condenser is always better for vocals in all situations and for all singers. I think the condenser is normally preferred for vocals due to its greater sensitivity and flatter frequency response compared to the dynamic. However in a live situation you may prefer the lower sensitivity of a dynamic (less feedback ).

HTH.

Who told you this?

Improved vocal sounds come from using a mic correctly. This responsibility belongs to both the singer and the engineer / producer.

It's no secret that U2 has been using SM58s exclusively on their lead vocal recordings for years. Their next album will go 3 platinum, I have no doubts. So, I'm of the opinion that a SM58 is a professional microphone that can be used on vocals for bands who afford to use anything.

Don't get me wrong, I have my share of condensers. I just consider condenser mics to be different NOT BETTER than dynamics. If you get this "better" crap out of your head, you'll get a lot better at this recording thing in a short amount of time.

Read this thread:

and this one:
Which Mic sounds best on my samples? AT4050 or SM7b

You can't put it into words. You just need to listen to both in the context of the song.

My advice is for you to spend more time experimenting with your SM 58. Experimenting is free.
