Cool Re: Building my own home recording studio.

Hi! My name is PJ and I have a similar situation. I'm involved in helping a friend set up a sound studio with a live recording room for recording teaching sessions on VCDs and audio tapes. We will be starting the construction from scratch and would appreciate comments and advice regarding several aspects of the project.

A. We plan for our studio suite to have various rooms, including an office 16' X 20'; a live recording room 10' X 15'; a control room 10' X 11'; a copying and production room 10' X 17'; and a storage room 10' X 17'. Will those room sizes work, or is there a recommended room size for these activities?

B. Would it work for our live recording room to double as the audio recording room, or do we need separate rooms for each activity? Naturally, we would only be using the room for one function at a time. We have been told that it is essential to have a separate sound proof cubicle for audio recording for sound reasons but it sounds like duplication of effort and expense to us. We were also told that 10' X 15' is not large enough for a live video recording room. Any comments?

C. The audio recordings would be involving only one or two people speaking, and the live video recordings would involve only 3 or 4 people in an interview type setting.

D. Do we need to soundproof the control room in addition to the live recording room?

E. Do we really need separate rooms for live video recording and audio recording? If the room is properly constructed for sound control and acoustics, wouldn't one room work for both?

F. How tall should the ceilings be?

Thanks for any input anyone can provide.

PJ

Hello,

Just getting started in the recording world. Thinking about the Digidesign Pro Tools Le set up, but I'm still browsing and reading. They have a setup where you can get an 8 Channel mixer to do more hands on mixing and get out of the video world here and there, but I don't know if it's worth it. My goal is to learn a felixible system quickly and start recording. With all the choices, it is a bit overwhelmng...but I'm excited to get going........

It's not really a mixer. It's a control surface. It can be a fun toy, but in the end, it is just a gloried mouse. It's a convenience thing. I your mixes don't translate to the outside world well, I would completely hold back on buying anything of convenience

Hi

I used Yamaha NS10's for years and found they were great. If these 80's have a kinda flat mid range non hi fi sound them they'll be fine. Having said that I'm using some big old cheap Eltax hi - fi speaker and some smaller nice little Mordant Short one mounted higher and fixed to the wall. all playing through a conventional Cambridge Audio hi fi amp. have a DAW system

hope ur well down under mate

Regarding Kivas and circular rooms for studios: an alternative- the geodesic dome
Something to consider . . .
A high-frequency (small triangles) geodesic dome would be very near a circular room, and CAN be built by someone with general carpentry knowledge. Hiring all the work out can get expensive, but there are numerous people skilled in geodesic construction, and if one was to do most of the construction themselves, they can have quite a nice-size structure at a reasonable cost. Dome extension rooms can extend out from the main structure at multiple locations, and these structures can be built much like an A-frame room (to house equipment, entry/exit halls, bathrooms, etc).

one thing that i will recommend STRONGLY is to avoid all parallel walls. this will solve many problems down the road that could get very expensive like diffusers, absorption, bass traps. without getting too in depth, the sound waves will bounce off a wall at the same angle as they hit it. so if you have parallel walls, they will bounce off each other. you will create an effect that is known as flutter echo. if you look at the structure of many recording studios, not the final treatment, the walls will be at odd angles to each other. this is probably easier than building a circular room. and you thought you'd never use geometry in real life.
