I'm just getting into recording myself, so I haven't figured it out personally. But in my previous band, our producer always had me scream into an sm57. I don't know what effects were used, though. I'm guessing a good amount of compression, and maybe a very subtle reverb. Whatever he did, it sounded great.

I do know that when I hear cds with screamy singers, I prefer not to hear or notice any over the top effects - like obscene compression and/or a little overdrive. It's especially less impressive when you see them live and their screaming's not as intense as it sounded recorded. To me, brutal vocals begin with the singer. Screaming from the gut rather than the chest, if that makes any sense, sounds great recorded with minimal effects. It should sound intense without the mic first. After that, I only know that our producer almost always used his sm57 for screamers.

If you have a high scream as well as a low growl in your voice, you can also double track them to thicken it up. But I wouldn't do it throughout the song. Just to add a little dynamics (hardcore stuff needs as much as it can get) to different sections.

Bingo! This is 99% of it.

If you have this, you are there. If you don't have this, no tricks will do what you want. You can get into gimmicktry with layering and whatnot, but when doing that you are just covering up flaws.

The only reason I'd shy away from a 57 for metal vocals is the lack of pop filter. I would prefer the 57 to the 58 if it weren't for that, but I'm sure a billion metal records have been done with a 58.

It was said not to use an obscene amount of compression. This is true, but metal vocals use A LOT of compression. Don't be afraid to smash them hard. Use a super fast attack and release and hit it.

Can you scream?

From the gut not the throat translates to:

Throat screaming yelling loudly to try and get the scream sounds works but only for a limited amount of time before u get nodes on ur chords

Gut screaming using ur diaphram to work ur lungs like bellows to create a constant flow of air behind your vocal chords creating a sound known as fry then adjusting ur voice box the same as u would 2 cleanly sing high or low changes the pitch

Dunno if this is much help but I hope it is cheers

Ps I use the shure sm58 aswell goes well
