Default audio technica 4040

Posted this in another forum but thought this one may be more appropriate. Has anyone ever used the 4040's as drum overheads? Any one have any sound clips of them?

We have 1 for vocals and I tried it as a center overhead. The mic is very sensitive and will pick up everything so if you make any mistakes, hitting a rim or getting your sticks tangled up it will be very obvious. I also ran into some phase problems I think in part to the sensitivity of the mic.

I switched to 2 Audio Technica Pro 37's as overheads and I prefer them. These also work great for close mic'ing hi hats.

No, I haven't heard any recordings of them. Do you happen to know where there is a post of some sound clips?

If you are running into phase problems because of the sensitivity of the mic, you've got much bigger problems than the mic. If you are experiencing phase problems with overheads, something is wrong. Your overheads should be phase coherent. Because of the 3-1 rule, your overheads should be in phase with the close mics.

What caused this phase problem? What mics were the culprits?

While on the lower end of the price scale, the Audio Technica AT 2020 mics are REAL mics. In other words, you are in the game with those mics. Anything else is going to be a difference in character, not necessarily quality. Of course, character and quality can go hand in hand, but not always.

I wouldn't bother with that upgrade yet. I was reading a review of the MXL V69 last night (I'm trying to fix both of mine) and a big engineer compared the MXL V69 with a Neuman U47. He actually preferred the MXL V69 to the Neuman U47 on acoustic guitar. What does that tell you? It says that price means nothing. The "classic" nature of a microphone means nothing. It's about mating the right mic to the right source. So keep your AT2020 mics for now and work on getting more experience and improving the more important parts of your chain.

I'm using Oktava MK 012's for overheads. I love'em!...You can find them on eBay. I don't think they're manufactured anymore.

they definitely are.

Oktava USA - North American Distributer of Genuine Russian Made Microphones

that's the place you should probably buy from. I've read that there's a lot of Chinese knockoffs all over the place, even guitar centre used to sell them.
