Default 1 Issue with Cubase & 1 Question

Hey guys,

I always get the answer I want here so here goes....

My first issue ... In Cubase LE, I have 6 drum tracks and eq on all of them recorded with the Firestudio. (I'm actually recording a whole album and I am going to add many many more tracks like guitars, bass, vocals, keyboard and more). When I go to add a track I get a "DAX ERROR: Out Of Memory" but if i click ok and wait a few seconds I can record fine and it seems ok .. Any ideas? Will I run into more problems when adding more and more tracks in the future... I'm looking to add about 15 -20 tracks to each song. Should I turn the eq off when tracking more?

And 1 question ... I am micing guitar cabs (loud) and i am using a MXL 991 .. It sounds really good but i am wondering if I would get an even better sound out of an SM57 .. I have heard those are great but havent used them for recoding. The guitar tones are mainly distroted (minor gain and alot of mids) and mostly clean guitar tones.

Any help would be awesome... Thanks!

Not sure about the first portion of your question but I can speak to the second part...

I have a 991 and an SM57. I also have an Audix i5. Sooo, the 991 is OK but sounds pretty brittle when compared to a lot of other mics. I like to use this one at the nut of an acoustic guitar (aiming a little down the neck) to add top end shimmer and pair it with a better condensor around the 12th fret.

I've used both the SM57 and the i5 to mic electric guitars and in my very humble opinion the i5 outshines the 57. To my ears the sound is rounder and less harsh. The 57 absolutely has its place and I'm glad I have it, but the i5 is my first choice for a dynamic mic, close-cab. Its also the same price as the 57.

Hope this helps.

Do you still get this error if you restart your computer? Is your operating system clean?

If your tone is really good, it's really good. If you are 100% satisfied with the sound forget the gear. Make an album! If you aren't 100% satisfied, it's time to look at other options.

Would you say this is someting that could be compensated for by moving the mic a bit further away from the center of the speaker or not?

Yeah thats true.. It does sound good... But I'm always lookign fro something better. I think it could be better... I may just pick one up and return it if it doesnt sound that good. You have a good point there. Yeah as far as i know my operating system is clean. If i close out of Cubase and re-open it it seems to be error-less. Weird.

Just wanted to know if anyone else came across that error before.

This is based off of me using both mics in what I found to be a sweet spot in one of my speakers (pretty much angled at mid-cone). The i5 sounded superior to my ears over the 57 in the same spot. Now that you mention it though, I will try moving the 57 a little further out on the cone next time it strikes me to use it...

Let me know how it goes. The sweet spot is a mic/source relationshp and not specifically just one location on the source. If there are gains to be made, an I5 may be worth looking into.
