Default Scramblin'

I wasn't sure where to put this as it's not quite country. Anyway, it's just vocals, acoustic guitar and mando. This is really my first attempt to get ANYTHING recorded. Let me know what you think, where I've totally botched it or where there may be a glimmer of hope. Thanks in advance!

nice sound overall....I'd strongly suggest you knock back most of the reverb .....I think we always tend to use too much when we first start out . Kinda like drinking .

Thanks for the feedback, Roysboy. After getting some distance from it (I hadn't listened to it for about a week.), I have to agree--too much verb.

I really hadn't realized just how challenging the whole process would be. The acoustic guitar alone was a nightmare for me. I had no idea the huge effect mic placement had on the sound. Anyway, live and learn, right?

Now on to recording acoustic drums! Ugh!

Again, thanks for the feedback!

don't get me wrong tom , your first effort is a fine one ....you've probably already learned one of the the big lessons about mixing and that is to stand back from the tune for a few days or so ..at least . ..nothing helps more than a set of fresh ears . Your acoustic sounds nice and clean and sits fine in the mix , I think ....serves its purpose admirably. If this is your initial efforts at home recording , you are probably already aware of how much more time and concentration it takes than you thought it would at the outset. Don't forget to feed the dog .

Great song, well performed. With fx they really need to be appropriate. Should they sound like they are in a hall or in a room jamming? In this one I definitely say a room. You want your audience to not notice the room your in. You want them to notice the performers. Most medium budget recordings tend to sound a little unreasonably dry and the reverbs and delays don't seem to "stick" to the instrument they are intended for. Most 1st timers drown in reverb. If you are going to air on one side or the other air on the side of dry. Large amounts of fx take large amounts of skill to make appropriate.

Cheers and good luck!
You have good talent to work with. That will make your job easier.

I will play with the 'verb a bit an tone it down. I'll repost when I'm done.

Thanks again, everyone!

Very different. I found it refreshing! Everyone else already mentioned the effects thing, so I'll ask; did you leave breaks in the song for solos to be added later? You you planning on adding drums, or percussion, and a bass guitar?
I might just add a bass an (up-right) and some percussion and call it done. I don't think the song needs a big production, with lots of other instruments. It's very cool just as an acoustic tune. Nice work! Keep it up!
