Default I assume some Dylan would go here...

Did a work up on Simple Twist of Fate by Bob Dylan. Be kind. One of my first mixes.

Enjoyed listening. The rhythm guitar sounds a tad out of tune. Also, you seem to be reaching for those high notes. Otherwise, nice mix.

Always tough to cover one of the classics like this, but this is well done. What are you using for a vocal mic? It really sounds good. Listening with my Sennheisers, I was very conscious of the noise floor when the lead guitar comes in (first solo), you might need to gate it a little? The only reason I notice is because the rest of it is so clean. Performance-wise, the second solo has some tentative-sounding notes - distracted me.

Vocals were recorded using an AKG-400 mic. Have to see about gating. I use ProTools 8 MP. How would I gate it? Compressor?

High notes were a bit of a stretch. Would definitely rework that part.

Don't gate. Just write volume automation so that it fades up just as the part begins. You can also trim the track to the start and do an edge fade so there's no blip. Seriously, you don't want to use a gate here.

Listen to garageband, I don't know what I am talking about.

Yes, do that. Sorry to contradict you, I just read the part where he asked how to gate something. Oh, well. When a gate shuts, it's a very harsh, unnatural and often ragged effect. You can spend plenty of time trying to get a gate to do this and still have it wreck your tails (and possibly attacks, as well). The methods I suggested won't do any of that sort of damage. In addition, most tracks can stand at least a hair of volume automation to keep any necessary compression less severe.

I do love the gated reverb return on a snare for that '80s effect, though. So gates aren't entirely useless in the studio.

Hey no worries. I have never really used gates because, well, probably for the same reason you are saying not to - I have never been able to get one do sound good, they always kill too much. I always attributed to my own inability to figure out how to set them. I assume you hear the same noise I do?
