Default First Post! "Back to Me"

Hello Community!

This is my first time using recording review, and it looks like an awesome forum. Enjoy the track, " Back to Me" Recorded with a Shure KSM27 on an MBOX 2 in my apt. Looking forward to any feedback/bashing.

Peace!

Harmonica is a nice touch. Lead vocal is somewhat dry - I'd add a little reverb and EQ to boost mid-high freqs. Like the guitar work. The tempo transition near the end could be a little tighter. All-in-all a pretty song and a nice performance. Welcome to the community.

Nice recording! +1 on adding a bit more "space" around the lead vocal. Really like the instrumental sounds you got here... The slide guitar & harmonica sound great.

Thanks a lot! I added some reverb and then playing it on a full stereo it was too much.... i always find it hard to find the right balance between what i'm hearing in my headphones vs a monitoring stereo.

Thanks for the input!

Try playing with the "pre-delay" control on the reverb - try between 30 & 80ms of pre-delay. This delays the onset of the reverb, so you can add quite a bit & not swamp the mix.

I think your vox are really good. Even though it's a short song I think there are a few parts that you could trim down about 3/4 through the song. Just a little bit so that it gets to the point and you have time to drive the chorus home more toward the end.

I really enjoyed the vocal and harmony.

+1 on the tempo change being awkward. Don't be afraid to work with silence. You did this masterfully as the song draws to a close.

I thought that some of the slide work (especially the middle parts of the intro and some of the bridge) was a bit noisy. It wasn't bad, but my normal expectation is more of a clean, "ringy" tone without a lot of pick and finger sound. Not like a pedal steel, though.

This is a good recording. I'm happy to have listened to it.

How did you record the bass? I couldn't hear it on my speakers at work but here at home it sounds really good.

TomZ,

Thanks for the feedback. So i think you're saying let the last chord before the tempo change ring out a bit more before bringing in the new tempo... cool i'll try it out.

You're probably right about the slide... my first time working with it. Actually all i'm doing is taking a Blues Harp Harmonica and playing it on my normal acoustic, kind of a cool sound, but very edgy.

Bass was recorded as an audio track via synthesizer - "upright bass" sound effect. I tried to boosted the higher end EQ because i thought it was kinda low, and then added a digirack compressor w/ Factory Default Setting of Bass Boost, or something like that.

Yes, i have the same problem, when i play it in my headphones or stereo speakers i hear the bass fine but via laptop speakers i can't really pull it out.
