garageband will become famous soon enough

Somebody mentioned reverb. Yes. I could stand to hear some very wide (crazy 50ms predelay, panned every which-way, highly HPF'd) AUX-driven convolution reverb.

I don't feel the same way about excluding the song. As a potential client, I listened to the tune (not the lyrics) and music in general and thought it was handled expertly. On a personal level, all that gnu-country stuff makes me ralph. The stuff about "daddy, front porches, hood of my truck, looked in the mirror, today like yesterday, etc." Uggh.

Paul,Is "dark" my tracking room sound or the sound/style of my mixes? Is dark a bad thing? If so,how can I get it less dark sounding?

By dark I mean mixing "style/gear". I bet that there is a piece of gear you use all the time like your console or some compressor that is high quality but dark sounding. For me the manley variable-mu does this. If I run through my Maxxbcl after it re-brightens usually but I still need to cut at 260ish.

It is bad thing in the sense that it doesn't give the sheen of commercial quality.

Would Pro mastering give it that commercial quality.I guess I need to use my eq's a little more during mix down.
I never do any kind of ozone mastering plugin crap on my stuff it just kills it.I will leave the make it loud and global eq to the mastering house.

This 8x10 tune was recorded on my old console so it's not that,Probably the pre amps,I have had those for a while.

I would recommend it, especially since you're doing everything you can to get accustomed to the country genre.

You should be able to get a professional, dependable pro ME (with the proper gear) to put the commercial sheen on it... in the $75 to $150 range.

Sounds good! I'll check him out. I'm on my Blackberry right now. I'm always looking for a good ME.

I hope I am not out of line. I needed to hear it on my gear to see if I thought mastering would be the right brightening solution. I did extreme quick and dirty small m mastering as TonyB would say. The mix stood up really well with a fair bit of compression. I put it through the manley vari and wavesmaxbcl. I cut 260ish (almost always need to with this combo) Rolled off a little lows. But it was the 8-16k area that was lacking. I would turn this up on a master eq and then adjust the vox sibilance. I added a bit of high mid reverb ( too much sorry). In mp3 format the bass will be smaller and the highs will be less present too. This file has been converted twice now I think pro mastering would be a wise investment.

Again. I hope this was not in poor taste.

I don't think it's out of line. Excellent work on "m"-astering!

Good learning experience. I can see where you needed to get sibilance under control.

It definitely has the brightened sound of this genre.
