Default Tap Out - Bash It

Hi everyone,

This is my first post from my new recording studio.
My band, Orents Stirner, is an improvisational rock band in Houston Texas.
We recorded 15 songs using mic'd drums, mic'd vocals and DI for the guitars.
all songs were one take, and made up on the spot.

This one is called 'Tap Out'.

So here is the back story of my long road to owning a studio:
For 18 years I have collected musical instruments and gear, I pawned a mixer once... and soon got sellers remorse. Since then I have kept everything, working or not. In college I went through the phases of putting carpet on apartment walls, egg crates, plywood, curtains, you name it. Then I get married and buy a houser. The wifey puts me out in the garage cause we "play too loud" and "I have too much crap", then as we have children she needs to park her car in the garage. Whats a musician to do?

So I come up with a plan that has worked out better than I ever could have imagined. After a long time studying techniques of sound abatement and reinforcement, I take my tax refund money and buy a 16'x16' wooden storage shed for about $2500.00. The great thing about that was it was cheap, was already painted, had a shingled roof and was inconspicuous to the HOA.
The builder came out and built in about 8 hours. From there I took my time and built it out to be a room within a room; 4" hat channels, raised floor, 5/8" sheetrock, ran electrical wiring from the house to a main box, and bought one of those really cool split-ductless A/C unit that are popular in Canada and Europe. For about another $2500.00 in materials I finally had my studio and could play till the sun came up.

Congrats on your new studio! This is a cool live sounding jam.Kinda like Beck.I think the drums sound a little muffled.Maybe try to eq them a little better.Everything for that matter sounds a little dull.I think you have a nice song just play with some compression to give it a little more fullness and play with the eq on every thing to get more of a brighter sound. This is a good start.Make some changes and re post. And BTW Welcome to the best home recording site on the web!Rock on! Thanks for tips RockerDude!

I hope to learn lots more from the group here.
I tweaked the mix added some compression and some vitality by using the BBE D8B Sonic Maximizer and SpectraLive plugins.

It sounds more full and livelier to me now, please let me know your thoughts.

Huge improvent from your last post but the bass is kinda heavy now I would trim that back. The vocals are a tad bit loud in the mix.If you try panning the guitars wide that will open up the mix and give you more sonic clarity.Drums are sounding much better.I always start with the drum mix then add every thing. Then do a final eq.If your just starting out try using compression just on the kik and snare not the compression on the master buss thing.dont forget to pan the toms and hi hat and the overheads if you used any.keep the kik and snare in the center. The guitars sound kinda harsh, try to eq those better and pan them out.The bbe is giving you the heavy bass so trim that back a little.use the bbe just on tha bass guitar track.Real drums are hard to get right and I think you are half way there on that one.Just put up the drums and pan them out and try to get a good sounding drum mix the add the guitars then the bass then vocals last. This works for me.when I go to mixdown I don't use many plugins I try to get a good signal and tone from the start. This makes mixing easy.

Hi Rockerdude,

One step forward, two steps back...
I've trimmed back the plugin's effects, put compression on the kick and EQ'd the toms.
It's more balanced now on the frequencies and volume levels. I had combined my left and right overheads into one track on the Alesis mixing board for recording live and did the same for the toms to open up channels for guitars and vox. So I can't pan the toms or overheads in Ableton but guitars are panned 75% L/R and bass in the middle. Vocal counter points are also panned L/R.
