Default re-record an old song?

This is a song I wrote and recorded in 2001 on a VS-1680..The drums, bass and piano are done with a Boss DR-5 drum machine..It was my 1st solo attempt away from my old band..It's a couple generations old (back n forth between tape and cd) so the sound quality is quite lacking. I've since built a computer with Sonar 8 installed and was wondering from you all if it is worthy of re-recording from scratch.. Any advice on any part of it would be much appricated..Thanks!

in the 80s, it would be THE best recording ever!

but since we are in the new millenium maybe not so.

in my opinion, you probably would want to re-do the mix. less reverb and such.

if you still want the fake drums, i suggest replace them with better electronic drums samples, like marilyn manson or so.

the guitars are well played and recorded. i wouldnt re-do them if i were you. just get rid of the reverb (again!? ) and perhaps reamp them.

the vocals: fantastic job on that one dude! but then again.. less... well... you get it.

the songs are pretty cool actually and the mix as it is, i like it very much. just update stuffs here and there and you should be done.

Sounds very old school because of the mix. Re-record it. And as irawan said, get rid of the reverb. The song writing is good. I like it. Also, you need better sounding drums.

I like the groove the bass is keeping and the drums are well programmed. I like most of what the guitars are doing too. I think the real room for improvement lies in the mix, the vocal melody and the arrangement.

I would recut everything. The guitar sound on the original is very digital sounding not to mention (as others have suggested) over processed with effects. If your upgrade to Sonor includes a good guitar amp plug-in or if you have a way to mic up an actual amp that would help a lot. A better drum machine or something like Superior 2.0 would help a lot too.

As far as the arrangement goes I would make the song at least 2-1/2 minutes shorter and maybe shave 3 minutes off it. The instrumental sections are (just my opinion) way too long and not all that attention-grabbing. I would probably work on the vocal melody to get a better hook.

Anyway, that's what I hear. The song has got a lot going for it. It just needs some tweaking on the arrangement and better sounds. Good luck with it.

Thanks sullivan! I really appriciate everyone taking the time to listen and give suggestions.. really helps! You pretty much have the same ideas as I do about it..it is to long and kind of gets a little redundent after a while..and I need to figure out something more "hookie" for the chorus..for lack of a better term..I do have a little marshall combo and a les paul that I'll mic up with a octava 319 and see if that helps the guitar sound at all..
