"Modern Rock" seems to be a euphemism for heavy, plastic pop with no soul.
That's a very good definition. Some synonyms: Nickelback; 3 Doors Down; Daughtry, etc. If this is your market, you probably aren't going to go very far because, unfortunately, this sound has been overdone.

Are you sure? There is such a thing as sample-replacing, which your engineer friend might not have bothered to tell you about. He also may have edited them to fit to a locked grid or quantized them, etc. etc. Just because someone played drums in the studio doesn't mean that's what's in the final mix.

Overall, the recording and mixing is very solid, no matter how it was done. As far as commercial appeal, you may need to look for something to set you apart from the rest of the heavy pop rock bands out there.

MUM you said everthing that was on my mind after the last post...LOL...too funny. great minds think alike I guess. Those drums were sampled for sure snare and kik anyway.I went to this studios website SLR studio and every song sample( Rock bands ) had the same production, drum sounds and guitar tone.Cookie cutter recording school template # 45.....LOL....True that Nickelback,Daughtry and the other 756 bands have this base covered This still was a nice recording and a good song just not that original and ground breaking.Remember when nirvana/Alice in chains/pearl jam came on the sceen and killed hair metal that was something ground breaking at the time.

I do remember this, and it's an excellent point. We've been in this hair metal phase for too long. It's time for a Nirvana to come along and shake things up. Or maybe we've been in the grunge phase too long, and now we need Korn and Limp Bizkit to do some nu-metal for us. You get the idea.

lol. Ok.
I'd de-pop it and re-rock it a bit then.
Slightly more interesting drum beat - bit more going on.
Less effects on the guitar (reverb, delay, chorus)
Leave the vocals as they are though they sound great.
