I thought that might have been it... I have alot of difficulty recorded distorted guitar. But my clean sound is half decent. so the mic placement on the amp... lets see... I believe I had my pencil condenser about 4" away from the grill near center, and the sm57 about 3' away 2" of center, angled torwards the center. drums were the 57 above the snare, angled torwards the bass. and a pencil condenser overhead looking at the snare. |

I like this performance, but you could get better guitar tone out of a direct recording with VST plug-ins for distortion/amp. Mic'd guitar is generally thought to be superior to the line/VST approach. So your mic'd guitar tone needs work; but you already knew that. As it is, are you in a place where your amp is 'pushing air?' Someone told me that 'pushing air' is necessary for a good, mic'd guitar recording. Maybe turn the treble on the amp way down, and go for much chunkier tone? Anyway, you can obviously play. |

I think you are in contention for my award for most horrid electric guitar sound ever. I can't imagine how you could get a Line 6 and a Strat to sound so bad (I just press the heavy metal button on my Line 6 and it sounds just fine), but I'd start by swapping the mics over, 57 near, your small diaphram condenser distant. You must do something with the room, get some soft funiture in there, cushions duvets, drape stuff in chair backs etc. Love, The Tigs PS Sorry if I was a bit sharp. |

And the deal with my amp is the problem. the recordings sound nothing like the actual amp.I know thats how its SUPPOSED to be, but then How do I get a good sound out of this amp? Its perfectly fine. edit: Would you guys be willing to give me an Idea of EXACTLY what I need to do If I give you all the raw tracks? cuz heres what I did. 2 mics one each guitar track (4 tracks total) track for lead and rhythm panned L and R 2 for drums, slight panning one centered bass. 'Pushing air' in this context means the amp is turned up loud enough that if you were to put your hand in the air in front of the speaker, you'd feel vibrations. It means turning up the amplifier to a 'decent' level. If your microphone issues aren't resolved, a fallback position would be to record as a line signal, then apply VSTs. The simulanalog guitar suite probably can't match the richness of a good, mic'd sound; yet on the other hand, the VSTs in it would provide better tone than what you've gotten thus far. Here is a link to a site with the simulanalog plug-ins: simulanalog guitar suite Here's hoping you get this resolved to your own satisfaction; because again, you really can play. |

I realized I recorded the guitar at a relatively low volume, and that may have a lot to do with the sound quality, because I turned my amp way up, and recorded with 2 sm57s, and it sounded mucchh better raw.rar Raw files. Its big but please, Im begging for more input!! |
