Guys, I recently bought a small Laney 15watt Bass amp ( RB1) and i tried mic'ing it with a SM57 through a Behringer mic preamp. Ok I do get some volume up but I still can't actually get the right sound in Sonar eventhough the sound coming out of the bass directly is marvellous. Can I use headphones out as a DI? and What would be the ideal mic'ing position for SM57 and a audio technica 4042 condernser? Cheers! |

The best place to start with a 57 IMO is halfway between the cone and the edge of the speaker. You maybe surprised at what you get from the condenser about 2 to 4 feet back. It may be good or absolute rubbish. You can use the headphone out as a DI if you have a trs cable or pull a mono cord out half way but the sound you record will have little to do with what you hear out of the speaker.

Starting with a great source is key. Score one for you A tough thing to realize is that the only sound that matters is what comes out of the monitors. There is little chance that your bass will sound the same because of the monitors to start. The 57 will not represent your bass amp either. The condenser will be even less accurate. The trick is to select a mic and place it so that I captures the best part of what is coming out of the amp. You will be subtracting things from your bass sound as you mix so this is not a huge deal. You will need to really consider what are the best elements coming out of the bass amp. Is it the growl of the strings the clear wood tones etc. If it is the fact that it is rumbling the chair you are sitting in you will likely be cutting most of that in the mix. I have got a ton of good bass tones with just a 57. I usually prefer a 421 lately but a 57 is just fine. Think of your monitors as your new bass amp. If you capture the best part of the amp tone you will be saying to yourself. Wow that sounds just like the amp but it won't be. I hope this made a bit of sense Cheers Paul
