Default I'd love a good bashing!

Hi guys,

This is the first track I've mixed from my band's recent tracking session. We're a classic rock cover band although this is a cover of "But It's Alright," originally by JJ Jackson.

I should mention that I'm especially interested in a bashing of the vocals, since I'm the singer.

Also I'm aware that something is screwed up with the mp3 encoding - it shows as only being 1:41 long for some reason.

If anyone's interested in any of the particulars of what I did/didn't do, let me know.

Thanks in advance!
Will

I'd do something about that snare, maybe just make it more cracky or turn it up.

Maybe turn the horns up a bit.

and maybe - (id just try it to see how it sounds) boost the highs a little on the kick so it cuts through just a little more.

are the guitars clipping in the begining?

i like the vocals!
sounds good!

answers, answers...

I didn't notice the crackle in the guitars when playing out of Cubase, so I'm hopeful that is some strange artifact of the crappy encoding as well. I did hear that and wondered WTF?

I definitely see your point on the snare and the kick. On the horns, I think i'd be inclined to leave them where they are, both because they're Kontakt samples and become more obvious as they are more out front, and also because I don't want to define the song with them.

Not sure what you're listening on, also, but I don't have a sub in my monitor system but will be getting one very soon - so if there is anything strange going on down low... let me know.

I hear you on the horns then.

I'm listening on headphones and I don't really see anything wrong with the lows.

Cool vocals, & the horns are different to what you usually hear around this site. Generally the mix seems well balanced, vocals sound good, although they are a little dry - bit more 'verb perhaps? Don't mind the snare sound, but the kick needs more attack - try increasing the 3.5-5k region a bit. Bass guitar could do with some more definition as well as being a little louder in the mix. Guitars sound dull & a bit boxy - cut out the boxiness somewhere in the 400-800hz region & give them a gentle boost around 1.5 - 2.5k. Being super-picky here, but some of the rhythm playing is a tad loose at times - Just stands out because the rest is very tight... Nice work!

Thanks, guys for all your input.

I'm going to make a few tweaks tonight and I should be able to post the changes 2morrow.

I'll mess with the EQ on the Kick, and fix the snare. Our bass player also complained about his bass not being prominent enough, which after several listens, I can agree with to some extent. As for vocal verbs - what are your favorites? I find myself reaching immediately for the UAD Plate 140 on everything - just because I've never heard anything sound quite so good... that said, it is not always the best choice.

Any thoughts?

Will, I think this tune is eff'n killer....vocal levels are spot on and full of energy...I would almost bet you grabbed your nut bag a couple times after the key change...but that's a good thing....if I were you and HAD to change anything, I would drop what sounds like a triangle solo on a keyboard and funk it up with some more horns or a guitar solo.....I can really appreciate this tune....great job!
