Default Alice in chains cover

Hey crew, today i was braggin to my buddy about how well i could cover Lane Staley from alice in chains and after i got to thinkin about how much i ran my gums i decided to cut some trax to see if you guys thought my opinion of my Alice ability was accurate.

With a rating system of one to 10 could you please hit me with a number after yr listen. This is definately not my best effort as i havent rocked this one out in years. But my opinion on how well i covered lane on this particular cut is a 6. I got an 8 in me somewhere with some practice. The second verse which starts at 145 is better than the first.

My only concern is how well i match his voice here and i realize other than that it sounds a bit painful. The low end on the guitar gets a bit out of control so watch yr gear. Thanx for the bash

The second verse does sound better for sure..now if only the words were right..

Laynes' tone came from his pain, drugs, smoking, and training from David Kyle.

I'd say 6 is an honest rating.

If I were going to the bar and you happened to be up on stage doing this, I'd be cool with it and probably sing along in my seat.

If it were on a tribute compilation, I'd expect just a bit more from it, but I wouldn't be unhappy.

Sounds like if you spent a bit more time on it, you could pull off a real passable cover of it.

My brother does this tune a lot for fun and it's one of my favorite AIC tunes. Good choice.

Thanks V i just noticed yr post. I didnt mention that im only a guitar player

I loved these guys at one point and i always get accused of sounding like him.

At one time i took it as a compliment. I havent played a cover song in ten years that i can remember. And once in a while (during originals)still get sounds like lane, which are fistfighting words nowadays. Not because its lane just be cause i wanna sound like me. Thanks for the listen guys.

Thanks for the wicked tune! RIP Layne. My fav metal/rock vocalist. Sadly missed.

I thought the only thing missing was the pain and anguish. Otherwise, you sound kinda like him. Timbre's pretty close too. I'd go with a 7 cos I think it takes balls to wanna cover him. Thanks again for that song man. Brings back memories.

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's not that bad. I thought the guitars were sloppier than your vocals were. I had to comment though, because this happens to be my favorite Alice In Chains song. I was in a band about a year or so ago that covered this tune. I always loved when it came time for me to play that guitar solo near the end. It really gives me chills of nostalgia.

Anyway, I must say I was expecting the vocals to be rather shitty (not because I think you're shitty, but because Lane is hard to cover...period). When your vocals arrived in the track, I was pleasantly surprised on how close you sound to him. It was almost scary-close. What others have said is true about the lack of pain and anguish, however. I give it a "7." With a little bit of a "fanboy" attitude and some perserverance to cop Lane, I think you could easily work toward a "10." Nice job. Where's the rest of that solo though!!??

I think you did a good job on this, even though it's apparent that you didn't spend a lot of time on it. If I saw you perform the vocals in a bar...I'd fuckin' become stone-sober for a sec to listen more closely. Then, I'd realize that there's got to be more dirt in it or something to really scare me. Again, you have the ability to pull it off, but dig deeply into the dirt and torment. You'll find Lane there.

Thanks for the kind words. Metaldude I totally feel you on that guitar solo. It puts me in another place.
I dont know what you guys think but to me, Jerry Cantrels guitar sound on Facelift absolutely makes me high. To me that is the best guitar sound ive ever heard bar none.
Back on topic, the reason that this all came to be was because another person that i spoke to also felt like Lanes voice was a tough one to cover. Again Metal you have said the same thing. I find it surprising that anyone could think that his voice was hard to cover, so i got to thinkin that maybe i wasnt as hot shit as i thought and decided to put it up somewhere that it would get an honest review.
I think if you guys are willing to give a 6 or 7 on this take, when im at my best, i must do a pretty good job of hitting it.

Most of the embarrasment came from that super high quality recording i laid on you guys. Im a guitar player of about 25 years and OMG did you hear those guitar trax? sheez
Thanks again guys for the bash.
