Re: Adam Hines - Seperated, hard rock/metal
Okay, the riff was cool.
Since the song is titled "Separated" I'll use that as the theme for my post.
It appears that the frequencies you need to use to define your bass guitar are not separated from those of the kick drum and the guitar.
The kick drum is a bit over-powering by itself. The drums are over-powering. You need to separate them out from the other instruments by carving a little room in them. Try removing about 3 to 6db @ 400hz or so on both the kick and snare. It will give the guitar some room.
Try cutting a bit out of the kick drum somewhere else. Take your EQ, turn on one of the buttons, say around 800 hz, and set the Q at 1.0. Now boost it up on parametric ( not a shelf, if you happen to be using the first or last EQ buttons ) like 9 or 10db. Move it back and forth ( it's called "sweeping" ) until you hear something a bit bad. That's a good place to do some cutting. Turn it down until it's between say -3 or -6db. Sometimes you have to go all the way down -9db or more.
Now head over to your bass guitar. See if that is a good place to maybe give the bass a little boost. You just made some room.
Try that sort of thing on all of your instruments; Sweep the frequencies, listen for the bad stuff, cut it out. Now you have room for other instruments to sit in.
Got to keep 'em separated.
