Default It's TIME! Planning a studio, any thoughts about my planning?

yeah ! me and my band has finally found a place to build our own studio / rehearsalplace after 5 years of rehearsing at an (almost) public place!

Right now we are about to sign a contract for a 100 square-meter place, right in the middle of the city in a basement for (translated into USD) about 230 bucks a month!! Luckily there already were windows between two of the rooms and it would be sweet to keep it that way! (yeah I probably need some extra windows to make it more soundproof!)

ive got the blueprints translated to google sketchup now and ive already made a though of how the studio would be like (we're planning to get quite serious with this thing! )

Anyways, i've read a lot about the golden rule and 2 meters to each wall and al that but what do you think of the size of the studio ? it is supposed to be for everything from vocals, guitars to drums! (Everyone in the band wants some kind of space to just chill out, eat, sleep, and so on if the nights are late so that's why the chill room is there!)

tell me what you think and I will try to keep some kind of updated thread when the constructing begins!

cya

Anton

Seems like the Goldilocks type of space.
One thing, though. Try set the walls on the live room so they aren't parallel. This may sound like internet folklore-inspired hokum, but it makes a huge difference in how acoustically stable it is and doesn't dictate the overuse of absorptive and diffractive materials to get it usable. If it were me, I'd probably kick the horizontal wall down on the left and LH vertical wall to the left. We're only talking about 10 degrees or so.
Meanwhile, back in the tracking room, plan to bass-trap the sharp corner. Maybe put the fridge in the narrow part of chill room.

How are your floor and ceiling situation?

I'm sure you have your bases covered, but...

The owner of the space you are renting doesn't care that you are modifying the internal structures ?

Have you signed a lease so that he can't evict you after you have put the time and money into the renovation ?

It's cool! It's in a basement and a room that this company can't hire for offices because there are to small windows, and my dad works at the company and so on

Now all you need to do is tap the output of your board into the building's office speaker system and give the occupants some comforting music to help soothe their day.

personally i wouldn't bother with the corridor, if its only you guys down there then i would just have a good ol' 'recording' light in the chill room so anyone in there knows not top come running through your live room, that or a talkback into the control room.

The money saved on the wall i would use on
(1)taking the two bottom corners out of the live room and on
(2) decent sized panels that can be carried into place an to catch relections in vocals recordings. When i last saw this they just used foam on mic stands but it worked a treat.

Plus you'll have a bigger live room

Anyway I wish you the very best this looks like alot of fun i'm very jealious, and keep us posted !

Hello guys! I've been to the place tonight again and i'll upload some pictures soon! the reason why we want some kind of chill room is because we would love to make this studio commercial in the future, and the chillroom will also be a great place for sleeping during extreme recording sessions and just a place to hang when your done with work for the day! i just gotta tell you that this cellar is at a perfect place, it's in the middle of the city (Jonkoping in Sweden (appx. 125.00 ppl) and 300 meters from a music store! hang on, I'll post some more updated blueprints too!

Alright! I spent some time down there tonight and took some photos, measured some stuff and so on! The ceiling is 2.45 meter up and there there are some kind of standadr acoustic plates hanging to cover the pipes and stuff, and the space over the acoustic plates is 34 cm ! i asked a guy and the can for free change the lattice "plates you will see in the ceiling! the ugly lamps will be throw out fast!. So I'm not shure how to do with the roof, should i trow like 10-15 cm rockwool up over the acoustic plates ? (they are 2,5-4 cm thick!) and the wall with the windows to outdoor need to be closed and filled up totally!.

here's the filckr channel! Studio Construction - a set on Flickr

i added updated blueprints too (gonna rebuild them from scratch now!)
