The placement of this overhead 'absorber' is another open question. I threw out the '3 foot behind the chair' idea almost arbitrarily. My naive reasoning goes like this:

The vibration leaving the studio monitors move outward in a conical shape. The sound waves do not significantly shoot straight up from the monitors. I'm thinking in terms of angles and reflection (like playing a billiards pool game or viewing angled mirrors). My first intuition is that the direct signal would be absorbed if the 'ceiling cloud' was placed slightly farther back from the listening position.

The ceiling absorber would act to reduce overall room reflections in the same way that wall-mounted absorbers do. If someone knows of a reason why one position or angle is better than another, we'd love to hear it. I'm just trying to brainstorm here before I start laying down any cash or do the construction work.

I don't think you'd want the cloud behind you. Lower frequencies are pretty much omnidirectional, so you can't really think of it as coming out like a cone shape.

you'd want the cloud at the reflection point between yourself and the speakers, which, if the speakers are at ear level, would be on the ceiling half way between you and the speakers.

Yes, but hanging a blanket could hardly be effective as as an effective absorber of 'lower frequencies' could it?

I haven't heard of a 'cloud' until today. Perhaps if someone could provide a definition of what a cloud is, it would help clear things up. Someone suggested hanging a blanket. This is not a bass trap.

Is a cloud a bass trap, a broadband trap, or a diffuser, or what?

i think he just used the word cloud because it would hang over your head, at least that was my interpretation. i believe i read in another post that hanging a blanket from the ceiling above you was a good way to absorb frequencies, ill do some serching and see if i can find it.

a cloud is pretty much any acoustic treatment you have over head. It doesn't act any differently than side wall treatment, so you can make it a diffusor, broadband absorber or bass trap. Whatever the room needs most.

Sometimes a picture is worth a 1000 words.

Attached is a pic from a site I go to every now and then.

The pic isn't the best. You want the panel to hang 2" to 4" from the ceiling for best effect.
