Default Livening up a dead room?

Hello all,

I've been recording in a carpeted room, and have very quickly realized how deadening it can be to both tone and sound.

Is there any objects I can place in a carpeted room to liven it up? Particularily around the drumset. I won't be able to build a new room for a couple years, so I'm trying to work with what I can.

Also, Is it better to place the drumkit next to a wall/corner, or in the middle of the room?

The room is oddly shapped, with skylights and a /--\ shaped ceiling of sorts. If I had to guess, I would say the room is 30x25, but is certainly not in a specific shape.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Nevermind All,

Discovered 24 bit DSP effects on Mixer.... give a VERY NICE ambient effect to the drums, without sounding too digital. Drums sound very nice now.

to answer the original question, you can put some pieces of plywood in the space around the drumset to get some reflections back. Some around the wall at ear level too maybe.

You are lucky to have a dead room.

My recordin room has no wall paper and bare fucked floor boards with a matress covering the window. Its completely dead. I wouldnt ever change it.... although its sometimes rather amusing showing paying customers the "Beat Lab" haha......

You want a dead room....well, thats essentially what the matress does 50% dead 50% scag den

That is all

I come from the Bob Rock school. You get the room as live as you can stand it. Then you toss a blanket it here, throw 20 opened drum head boxes there, a 4x12 cabinet or 10 there until you get what you are looking for. Then again, I'm a big fan of lively drum sounds. I think Mr. Mister drum are awesome (sue me! ha ha).

There are some complications here and some rooms simply sound bad and you don't want to over emphasize a shitty sound. However, I hate working with drums from a dead room.
