I've been reading Brandon's Killer Home Recording and realised how important bass traps are but I have a problem. My studio is situated in my conservatory and my control room such as it is is very small. Another bigger problem is that I don't have walls around the control room I have glass. I have a window behind the mixing station and the windows of the conservatory behind me so my question is how can I treat a room like this with bass traps.

I realise the ideal solution would be to move the studio elsewhere but using the conservatory is the only option available at the moment. Any ideas for bass trapping however cheap and low budget will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Nigel
Nigel I just finished my small 10 x 10 studio. Check it out and maybe you can get some ideas. YouTube - Small Home Studio Acoustic Treatment with Bass traps

looks cool man...Did you make those bass traps? If so, whats the best thickness for bass traps and like I've gathered so far, you can never have too many bass traps, but what should i do with defusers and stuff like that.

Thanks for your time

Jono - Yes I built them myself pretty much following this plan YouTube - How to make a Bass Trap Acoustic Panel (Tutorial) The measurements they give are off. So measure, Measure and remeasure

The Traps in the corners and on the rear wall use 4" of OC703 which is super easy to work with.

The cloud and wall treatment is using 2" of OC703.

Took me way longer than I thought it would. but once I started I figured what the heck might as well paint and build the closet as an awesome studio storage unit.

I'm so glad I did. I tracked some acoustic guitar last night and the sound IS Phenomenal to say the least. It actually sounds like an acoustic guitar )

I expect my mixing time to be exponentially reduced as well.

Yeah, I'm a legend in my own mind.

My speakers are about 6 inches away from the wall, and wanted to know if that is too close.
The only way to know for sure where is best is to measure the room response at high resolution while you experiment with different distances. That requires software, but it doesn't have to be expensive:

ETF, Windows, $150
FuzzMeasure, Mac, $150
Room EQ Wizard, Windows and Linux, Freeware
Using ETF explains how I use ETF, but the principles apply to all such programs.

Should I make some bass traps that are triangle shaped and put on in each corner or should i make a massive bass trap work top to the ceiling filling the entire "space between the back wall and chimney breast
All of the above. The more traps you have around the room, and the larger each one is, the closer you'll get to flat. It's that simple.

I've been communicating with GIK Acoustics and have been advised that at the very least I should have two bass traps in either corner of my rather small control room; one behind my mixing desk (which faces one corner) and one in the opposite corner.

I've also been advised that if my budget can stretch then two situated behind me when I'm sat in my mixing position will be an even bigger improvement. They aren't that expensive but the corner traps will jut out from the wall by about a foot and a half which could be a problem. At least I'm making progress with solving my audio problems.

Cheers
Nigel

Thank you again Ethan. I hope you don't mind if I ask you a question again haha, but this very important for me and hopefully I can one day afford proper treatment from you but for now I have to build some stuff and I live in England UK and although I have read much of your real traps site and understand that the recommended substance to use is Corning 703, theres nothing called that in the UK.

Theres something called Rockwool which people have said to me is similar, but I've never spoken to anyone as well informed as you

I guess I need advice on density and how much density is too much and then I can go out and find a suitable rigid fibreglass (although its not called that in UK as well haha)

Many thanks

Yes, rock wool is fine. Look for about 6 pounds per cubic foot, which is about 90 kg per cubic meter.
