| Just getting started using the various tools available in the Planet CCRMA suite for Fedora Linux. I am a hobbyist. I am fooling around with a lot of things; I suppose the best label to use would be "ambient music." First and foremost, because they are all *free* and yet have capabilities that rival and even exceed those of Cubase, Pro Tools, etc. Second, that it is a complete *system* not merely a single "program," so I have almost infinite possibilities as far as what I can do with it. The only limitations are my own talent, creativity and willingness to learn. I'm far too inexpert to give this any in-depth consideration, but right now I'd say "the learning curve." The price you pay for no-cost, powerful audio and music production software is having to learn quite a bit of it on your own. That said, since I'm a hobbyist, I suppose the challenge of seeing how far I can go with it is part of the attraction. So it's a two-edged sword. |

| 1)Which recording software do you use? I did use Acid Pro 5 and Sound Forge 7, but i recently bought a new program which i am amazed with and getting great results and thats magix Music Maker 11 DeLuxe. 2)What sort of work are you doing?* *Live rock bands?* Video game music?* Samples? Midi? etc Recording for local bands, recording my band, my solo projects 3) What do you love about the program you currently use? Absolutly everything. this program is awesome tons of effects, runs everything in real time with no delay (which was a problem with acid), effects can be added just by selecting and drag and drop it over the track, has harmony recognition so i can load up a song and it will analyze it and display the guitar tab and chords in real time. and its not a very expensive program and love it much more than $400 acid pro 4) What do you hate about the program you currently use? not a thing |

1)Which recording software do you use? I use FlexiMusic Wave Editor. 2)What sort of work are you doing? composing, editing of music for dance mix and mixing of music using sampled instrument sounds. 3)What do you love about the program you currently use? Its user-friendly editing interface for novice users, cost effective, can save the composed and edited songs in the trial version period. Edit and record music, apply effects and filters, adjust stereo channels, save audio to all of the popular formats and burn songs to CD. 4)What do you hate about the program you currently use? Nothing to denote. It is praiseworthy . Last edited by florida; 03-24-2007 at 05:09 AM. |

1. I use N Track for recording and Cool Edit for mastering as well as Harbal. 2. Just Personal recordings 3. For both programs I like the fact that I have become very used to them and they do everything I need. There is a lot of flexibility in N Track with midi, vst effects, not too hard on memory etc, with Cool Edit I mainly use Waves, Harbal smooths out the frequencies and then the track goes into Cool Edit to deal with the low end, and final volume levels and stereo widening, maybe. I'm a big believer in, if it ain't broke don't fix it. 4. Can't really say I hate anything about the programs. I would say make sure you make the effort to learn the program because when I first got N Track I let it sit around for 2 years because I thought it was way too complicated. |

1)Which recording software do you use? Protools LE 7.3 2)What sort of work are you doing?? ?Live rock bands?? Video game music?? Samples? Midi? etc Just home recording... me and my geetar hacking away. Mainly looking to start writing and get my ideas down on the hard drive and work with them, polish them, etc... perhaps be able to collaborate with others. 3) What do you love about the program you currently use? 1. I've been real impressed with the ease of use and the fidelity of the reproduction I get. 2. It's nice that some of my friends use protools also, so the possibility exists that we could collaborate on things by passing session files back and forth. Still remains a theoretical possibility but we may get to it at some point. 4) What do you hate about the program you currently use? My only issue with protools is that it shackes you to the hardware!!! When you try to launch protools one of the things it does is to go check and make sure the digidesign hardware is connected. If not it won't let you run the program. To me that is a major PITA and something digidesign should strive to address. I do everything on my laptop and it would be nice to be able to make some progress on edits and even working with midi stuff (via reason/rewire) when I'm stuck in an airport and my plane it delayed, for example, or if I just happen to be in a place where I have some time to kill but I'm not near home. Hell I could even make a bit of progress on lunch hour sometimes... we're not talking about a lot of time but as a hobbyist with limited time to spend with my gear and/or instrument an extra hour here and there would be considerable, percentage-wise. Would I buy the same thing again? I don't know because I don't know the others. Pobably I would though because it hasn't let me down and it has been real easy/intuitive to learn. I say that however as a person who hasn't really tried to do anything very fancy with it yet. Just a small number of vocal tracks, guitar, and maybe a drum/bass track via midi through reason. I upgraded to the full version of reason and I doubt that I'd do that again. It's a fine product but I'm just not going to be a big reason guy... the light version that came free with protools would have been good enough for me in retrospect. |

Please Answer The Following Questions In Your Post 1)Which recording software do you use? Sound Studio, Audacity, Amadeus Pro, Garage Band - Mac. Cool Edit Pro, Audacity, Mixmeister - PC 2)What sort of work are you doing?? ?Live rock bands?? Video game music?? Samples? Midi? etc Spoken voice recordings, mixed with backing music 3) What do you love about the program you currently use? I can record and edit with great ease. Sound Studio is a dream for mixing mono and stereo recordings together. Amadeus Pro is fantastic for placing bits of sound and setting levels for each track for the final mixdown - as is Mixmeister. GB is a bit limited but fast to learn and use. Coole Edit is a dream for basic editing. Audacity is great for setting final max level with no clipping. 4) What do you hate about the program you currently use? Amadeus has no real time display of recording, GB is too limited for level setting, Cool Edit is hard to use for multitrack positions and level settings, Audacity is unstable with Tiger. Taken together, they get the job done well! |

| 1)Which recording software do you use? The old Pro Tool 5.1 (?) free version, basically because I had an old juiced up G4 lying spare. 2)What sort of work are you doing? General song arrangement and writing demos for a band I'm trying to get together. 3) What do you love about the program you currently use? Like most software on a Mac, you can work it all pretty hard. Plenty enough for a learner like myself. It's fucking great!! 4) What do you hate about the program you currently use? The only problems come from the idiot working it all, as I am a newbie. |
