Default vocal comparison ad/da

hello everyone, how is it possible that a vocal recorded through an RME FF800 in cubase sounds thinner than a vocal recorded on a 003 in protools. same mic was used same vocalist. i thought DAWs all sound the same? or am i mistaken?

Can you post the two files? I'd be interested to hear.

Two different daws won't sound different, but two different interfaces or recording setups can.

i will post them tomor. can the system clock make a difference? on the RME it was 44.1khz, on the 003 it might have been 96khz? but would that make a difference in the sound quality?

I would do a test at the same sampler rate to find out.

Your using the built in mic preamps in each case?

The difference in DAW did not make the difference. Other things that may make a difference;
Different room makes about 60% difference in vocal recordings.
Different songs demand different singing styles.
Bypassing the built in mic pres with external pres.
Adding compression, EQ, reverb or anything inside or outside the box will change the sound.
Were you listening on the same monitors in the same control room?
The sample rate can cause loss of clarity especially in vocals, but after a long debate on this forum, 44.1 and 192 may be 3.42% improvement you can actually hear.

i completely understand what your saying. but from my knowledge, u can barely tell the difference between 44.1 and 96 or 192. but when i t comes to processing and adding effects, 44.1 can lose quality. and thats why 96 can sound better after its effected. am i right or wrong?

Anyone who has a strong enough opinion to tell you whether or not you are right or wrong has probably never actually done a proper A/B test to see if there is actually any difference.

But as 7thstring said, there are a number of things that will make the vocals sound different. Were they recorded in the same room? On the same day? Same room humidity? Same mic distance? Was the singer feeling better one time than the other?

There are so many things that could have caused it to sound different. Microphone and preamp make up a very small part of what a recording sounds like.

I record myself singing all the time with the same mic through the same interface into the same software at the same levels with the same plug-ins. Some sound fuller, some thinner, you get the picture.

I only work in 24/48k and I can use plenty of FX and processing without any loss of quality.
