Default Upgraded Mac Mini!

Recently, Apple updated the Mac family. The one that struck my eye is below...

2.26GHz : 160GB

* 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
* 2GB memory
* 160GB hard drive1
* 8x double-layer SuperDrive
* NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics
* Mac OS X Snow Leopard

It has 5 USB inputs and 1 Firewire 800 input. I'm wondering if this computer would work for a project home studio. I'm currently running a Firestudio. Would I need more firewire inputs?

Thoughts?

It's getting up there, but it still seems like just a personal PC for surfing the web and watching Youtube. Why do computers still put such tiny hard drives? 500 gigs is under $100 in the retail market.

You could run a Firestudio, and maybe even add an ADAT unit if you keep it at 44.1k bit rate. But for it to be considered worthy as a project music machine, I would at least want E-sata for an external HD. Even after that, with the growing demands of new software and hardware, this thing would be considered obsolete in 2 years.

The new Mini's are killer. I'm recording on a 2005 Imac with a 1.8 ghz cpu. I love it still - it outperforms my 7-month old dual 2.0 ghz. PC when it comes to Audio Recording. Mine came with a 160 gig Sata HD and I've added 3 FW drives (daisy chained) and a 1 terrabyte USB 2.0 Drive for storage. I'm looking at the new Mini's too - they world work great - trust me - I've been on Macs for years and years now and that little mini would NOT be outdated in (any more than any PC would) 2 years... I may grab one too. And DON'T buy your memory, etc from Apple - they charge way too much - use OWC (macsales.com).

I second strangedogs opinion. Having been on the mac platform for years, that mini will rock in a home studio.

Sonunds good. But is 1 firewire input enough?

I'm running a firestudio so that brings me down to 0 inputs. I won't need anymore for now, but is there anything that may require another one if and when I begin to upgrade my gear?

I have firewire running into my motu ultralite and out of the ultralite into a few external hard drives. I think you'll be fine.

firewire can be "daisy chained" - 1 into another - 1 input should be fine or buy a hub.
