    Default Universal Audio Apollo

For 2,000 this looks expensive for an audio interface... but when you factor in the savings by going the plugin route as opposed to the hardware route... its pretty interesting....

Here is a video of some discussion back and forth regarding it and some questions/concerns...

The Apollo portion runs to the 40 minute mark and then goes in to something else....

$2k for an interface is NOT cheap. I'm waiting to hear what people who have used it think.

The UAD processing power is interesting, but in my 3 minutes of reading, I didn't see how much power it came with. Has anyone seen the specs on this?

I'd expect a Universal Audio interface to be great as I've never heard anything that wasn't excellent come from the company. However, $2k for an interface better be a very special interface. It might be.

You can get it as a Duo DSP $1999....and a Quad DSP 2499..... its the same specs as what is already available as a card for a PC or an external gizmo for the Mac.... I think its the same thing... just in an audio interface format....

In the video they were making a big deal that the UA effects could be added pre recording.... versus doing it in the DAW post recording....

I'm in the market for a new interfaces so the timing is nice, its between an RME or one of these, having a UAD2 duo is nice but I run out of plugins when using Manley Massive and Fatso pretty dam quickly so this looks appealing, I'm scoping the Quad proccessor. The idea of using all those great plugins while tracking is what's swaying me towards it, then during mixing you can use all your UAD registered plugins aswell.

So yes expensive-ish but a reasonable price considering what a UAD2quad costs on its own..

I will post a review when I become an official Guinea Pig! (although apparently not in stock till March)

    Cheers

This might be something I'd go for in a few years when I need a new interface and they have the bugs worked out.

I'm curious how it works with existing UAD cards etc.

A good interface is $1K, a quad is $1500, so no BIG savings apparent but having it all in one box with less latency sounds like something I'd go for.
I never finish a mix, just abandon it.

Just to be specific are you referring to the DSP plugin power?

I run out of plugins when using Manley Massive and Fatso pretty dam quickly
The Massive Passive and Fatso are hogs. No question about that. I always check my DSP usage before tossing on the Massive Passive. I've been using a crap load of UAD Multiband lately (every vocal track pretty much) and that makes less room for other luxuries.

I have a UAD2 duo already, i believe you just register the device (appollo) and your plugins will work with both UAD2 card and Apollo giving you more "DSP" . I would be surpised if UAD have unstable drivers.. Everything so far UAD I have has been really solid.... But willing to take the leap as it is Windows 7 64 bit compatable and I need this ASAP.

Also i read that the 64bit UAD plugins will be free for thier users and available sometime in 2012... So roll out the bungee jump!

This is very interesting since I am looking at purchasing an interface very soon and REALLY want some UAD plugs. To have them both in one package does sound nice. Great just when I thought I had it all figured out I am back to questioning everything. ugghhhhh
