Default Recording Multiple Inputs

Hi All, i am new to this forum, but i am already finding it very helpful !

I am looking to do some recording, i have done some before and i know the basics to how it works. What i want to do is be able to record multiple inputs at the same time on Adobe Audition (so the guitar goes to the guitar track, vocals to vocal track etc). So i am guessing i need a mixer ? but if i had a mixer how would the computer separate the sound ? i assume i need a sound card with like 8 inputs or something ?
I also want to have the ability to sit down with my friends all having headphones on and being able to hear whilst we play through the headphones and adjusting volumes etc ?

What equipment do i need to do this ?
Thanks in advance

you don't actually need a mixer for this... especially cause most semi-pro ones (ie. small behringers) don't have direct outputs, so you wouldn´t be able to separate the guitar to the guitar track and so on.

I'd say you could go with an 8 input soundcard WITH preamps, such as the PreSonus FP10 or the TASCAM US-1641. and a headphone amp, so you could have your friends listening too.

You should do some research for the audio interfaces though, the interface wizard and reviews here should help you a lot. But I guess that's basically what you'd need
