M-audio is only compatable with Pro-tools. Presonus products can use anything from Cubase to Abelton to Audacity. Depending on your preference, the FP10/Firstudio will be equal in quality to the Profire.
One major difference: If you plan on building your studio up to record full bands or need more than 8 tracks at once, the Firestudio Project and FP10 can only be daisy-chained with themselves meaning slower latency issued coming from only 1 Firewire port. I've been using 2 FP10's daisychained for a while now and the latency was a problem. I got an additional Firewire PCI card and pluged them in the computer individually and was a lot better.
The Firestudio (not project), and the Profire have the ability to add 16 more channels via a mixer or preamps with ADAT optical outputs.

yeah well i will be using audition, and all i really need is 8 channels, so the fp10 would be good? mind you that im willing to spend 700 dollars for the best possible product (in that price range) can you help me out string7th?

I was to understand that Digidesign and M-audio were not compatable with Steinberg software. I cant find the answer on the M-audio website specifically but every interface is bundled with Pro-tools software and advertises how it's "Pro-tools M-powered"

They're in the same ballpark... similar price bracket.

Not the case. M-Powered is a ProTools version that works with M-Audio hardware. M-Audio hardware does not require Protools... they'd be nuts to market it that way. They want you to buy ProTools because its all part of the same company, but its not required. I've just been to the site and it says specifically...

"2626 brings next-generation performance to your PC or Mac host-based recording system"

It's not fussy what you're using.
