Wouldn't software cost more than a reasonable mic?

I just saw a Groove Tubes GT52 which is a good condenser mic go for $80 on ebay.

There's lot's of good deals if you know what to look for which requires some (lots) of reading. Also, I don't know if your interface has a preamp with phantom power.

if you want to do any quality recording, then no. Phantom power is the power required to run condensor mics.

If you are looking for a cheap mic, or relatively cheap microphone without the need for phantom power, you could try and get your hands on a SM58 used someplace. I am sure you could get one for like $80 or so.

If you record shit, you can't polish a turd. There is not software out there that can turn a shitpile into a goldmine. Not going to happen. I would get a nice microphone before I would do ANYTHING with software. A good condenser would be much better, but it appears that money is a huge issue so I would get something like a decent dynamic mic. I pointed out a GREAT dynamic mic, but you could even get away with something like a Seinheiser for like $50 if you really want to go cheap and get decent sound from it.

Phantom Power is basically 48 volts of power to run the microphone. To make it simple you need to power up a condenser microphone. I am sure someone with much more knowledge than me can tell you more detailed info...
