My Lexicon Omega had an issue last summer where it would drop out and not be recognized by the computer. Constant driver reloads and a history of other USB conflicts, (printers, scanners etc.) got me thinking about buying a new firewire interface. After reviewing all the alternatives in my price range, (I bought the Omgea for $299 but it has since been priced at $199) I could never find a unit that had the same features (channel inserts, phantom power, external monitoring, etc). Then I learned on the Lexicon forums that others were having the same problem. It was an uninsulated ribbon cable that was overheating near a power transistor. I decided to take a chance and send it back for repair. They had been charging a flat $85 for non warranty repairs but they suddenly reduced it to $70. While waiting for it's return I invested $14 in a dedicated PCI USB card. It came back in less than two weeks and I have not had any problems since.

I would recommend the Omega because it functions as a mixer as well as an interface. It's quiet.

    WARNING WARNING TABOO SUBJECT!!!
It has dbx silver series preamps, whatever that means.

BTW the Omega differs from the lower priced Lambda in that it has it's own power, Lamda runs off the USB bus) and the aforementioned preamps which are supposed to be better.

Customer support has been good and they recently sent me a Cubase LE4 DVD as an upgrade to the Cubase LE that came with it when I bought it 3 years ago.

    ElectricLight,

Thanks for the post, I'm torn between the Presonus Firebox, Presonus Inspire, or the Lexicon Omega. My wife and I don't require a lot of simultaneous tracks, 4 will be plenty. How do you like the computer interface? It looks like it could be a little more cumbersome than the Presonus.

    Mvioman,

This is directly from the Lexicon Omega Manual.

    "USB Port
The USB Port is used to connect the Omega to your computer. A standard USB cable is included. The Omega is compatible with USB 2.0 ports, but the USB 2.0 bus will switch to the slower USB v1.1 speed to work with the Omega."

So as long as you have some USB 2.0 ports on your computer, nothing to worry about. Set your music free :-)

    Mvioman,

I would suggest you take a look at the Soundcard Wizard on this site. You can specify what your requirements are and it will show a list of cards that will meet your needs. That way you can narrow the search by price range and see what interface suits you best. I don't own the lexicon yet so I can't really comment on it, but Electriclight has used one for many years and had good luck with it.

    Good luck!

I would say The Lexicon Omega it is one of the better deals around. You have plenty of inputs, each with level meters and controls, MIDI, Phantom power, good preamps (they say) output monitoring, and this is rare: inserts. As far as latency goes, the latest drivers are very good and I can get it down to nearly 2 ms. for recording. These days the Lexicon goes for $199 US. That's $100 less than when I bought it.
