Default Help with Drum Mics

i have been pondering my next purchase and its pretty clear that i need better mics. the ones i currently am using aren't even mine, i am "borrowing" them from my high school over the summer. they are just dynamic vocal mics, i found a little info online that they are actually decently nice... for vocals.

i'm thinkin i should get a few Shure SM-57's for snare drum/guitar amps. but i wasn't sure if it is best to buy a package of drum mics or select them all myself individually. as i already mentioned i'm only in high school so my budget is a little tight.

that price is definately doable.. could u name a few.
i have looked seen the samson drum mics, they seem to run farely cheap, but i didn't know if they were actually anygood. i'm sure they will get the job done but i was hopeing to go for something one the decent to nice side. (unless i'm completely wrong about the samson, plz correct me if i am).

this is a great mic package for drums.
Buy CAD Premium 7-Piece Drum Mic Pack online at Musician's Friend
it is slightly more than $200.00 but worth it! Make sure you use mic stands and put them on foam rubber or something to keep the resonance from traveling through the stand and into the mic. Mounting the mics on the drums is a no-no. You may read in the reviews that the 2 overhead mics didn't work. You will need phantom power for those 2. Any time you use a condenser mic you have to have some sort of power supply. the best thing for this is Phantom power built into some soundcard interfaces or mixers.

How about the Shure DMK57-52 kit? It is a little higher but seems a standard in the industry?

The only thing about the "industry standard" in the world of home recording is there is no standard.

It's tough to beat a couple of 57s when you need a 57. I'm not huge on the Beta 52. I like the Beta 91 MUCH MUCH MUCH more.

Does the Shure DMK57-52 come with any overheads or condensers of any kind?

I'm trying to figure out what you are trying to do here. Are you trying to get enough mics to record a drum kit with everything close mic'd or are you just looking for a couple of mics for everything?

The DMK57-52 is three SM57's plus the Beta-52A. I have a pair of Peluso hyper and some top of the line DPA's and Schoeps and a RODE NT1-A. I was just looking for a basic drum kit that could take a beating and still sound pretty good. I have seen these in use on a lot of the local bands and where I work as an apprentice on the sound board.

I assume you mean a "mic kit" and not a "drum kit". Regardless, three 57s and a Beta 52 isn't a bad way to go either live or in the studio.

I wouldn't buy the kit though unless it was cheap because you could snag all of these on Ebay pretty cheaply. There is usually some dude selling 3 SM57s for $180 or so.

this is also what i am trying to figure out. i've got my firestudio project (which has been a pissin on me since i got, still have not recorded anything after two weeks and now it won't even sync to my pc) and need to record 3 amps and a drum set with the 8 inputs. i figured we would have to do vocals seperate to get as many drum mics as we can. that leaves, what, 5 inputs for drums which is where it gets tricky. Kick, Snare, Two over heads, and...

tell me what u think about that and if u have any suggestions on what is wrong with my firestudio plz help.
