You should specify what kind of music you want to produce.

Your gonna need at least a 1.4ghz processor to go computer based. A decent software is about 150.00 bucks. My experience with soundcards bundled with software is that the limited software versions are really cheesey and when you complain the companies will just sell you on the full version anyway. If you want to go computer based start with a good software platform and begin learning it.

Try both of these:
Starting Your Own Home Recording Studio

Home Recording Soundcard Wizard / Audio Interface Search Tool

Where did you come up with that figure? Reaper is cheaper than that. Audacity is free. They both very popular. I'm not sure if they do everything a person would need, but they do very well for a lot of people.

Where did you come up with that number? It's highly dependent on what the person is recording. An acoustic guitar / songwriting guy recording nothing but guitar or vocals could get by on a Pentium 3 550Mhz from almost 10 years ago. A person doing MIDI sequencing using virtual instruments would max out 1.4GHz in a heartbeat.

Your opinion is noted, but there are way too many guys around here using Cubase LE (particularly LE4) who are totally satisfied with it and have no intentions of upgrading to Cubase 4. Food for thought.

Yeah assuming is never good. I did say the version of cubase LE 4 "I got" was a joke. Its only my experience. Yes for basic recording I could use something free. I should have said for Producing midi and audio. Entry level production software is around 100 bucks no? I'll tone down my rant next time.

Oh, I don't know. "Entry level" is tricky because it doensn't address the issue of personal needs. Besides open sources stuff, I know of zero $100 programs that are top notch and unlimited.

To get the software with no limitations designed to do just about everything you are going to spend at least $500 (unless you get a deal via upgrading....which is another major reason bundled software is a great way to go).

I'm surprised that you found Cubase LE4 to be a "joke". I've seen the specs on it and I was suprised as they had opened up dramatically more features than Cubase LE had. Can you explain why you felt that? Just curious.

Maybe there was something wrong with it. It wouldn't process audio. It was a big pain to license and didn't include the USB dongle. When I read reviews on the package other people wrote complaints about the same issues and so I returned it. I'd rather have a solid and legal working software than something with stuff blocked out and bug problems. I love Cubase Essential. Your suggestion on Audacity is perfect and I'll leave the answering of help to you. All in all I'm not an expert on software and should have avoided this thread all together. P.S. You cant deny some companies set-up people to get them to spend more. I give Steinberg a good rating, but some bundles and re-bates are a flat out scam. Good for you if you have more faith. I love the site. Thanks
