Default Gear suggestions for vocals

I have some gear a few years old but largely unused. I have a Yamaha MX 12/4 mixer, but I have a feeling it's a piece of gear I won't need. Also a mic AKG c1000; a digidesign 350 effects I purchased for harmonica; and a PC with lots of memory.
I want to do some ongwriting and arranging and will probably use Reaper for that.
But first of all I want to do some vocal harmony multi-track recordings, ie barbershop and other styles, and I want to do these on my own. In other words create a virtual acapella quartet with multi-track recording. Is there anyone one this board who has done this? And if so with what gear?
I'm thinking of getting an 8-track stand-alone recorder such a the Fostex HR machine to begin with. This would give me a bit more time to get acquainted with the DAW software. Question: Would the stand-alone Fostex give me good quality and ease of use? Would I be able o take the Fostex (with my mic) to another location and do some self recording without any other gear?
I have not been able to determine from the many barbershop tag multi-tracking posts on YouTube what type of equipment they are using. Many of them also include the video (screen split into 4 parts).
Any good advice or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
John

Remembering that opinions are like backsides (everybody has one!), you already have much of what you'd need for a starter DAW ... the PC and the mikes. If you check out the soundcard wizard on the home page, you can find one relatively cheap with included software. That would give you more than enough for four part acapella as well as an evnironment to help you with your writing and arranging. For what else you'd need, you can find the info right here.
