Default Dumb Question.

Does the interface/soundcard have any roll in mixing other than d/a converter to monitor out. Basically what im asking is. If i tracked a song on lets say an apogee rosetta, put the wave files on a disk, opened them on a computer elsewhere with no special sound card, did some basic cuts between toms, maybe find some verb or effects, bounce it, whatever. then save the audio. Have i degraded the quality at all. Or once it is digital in the box the interface has nothing to do with it? I hope this question makes sense. I think it might be a dumb question but i wanted to make sure.

Thanks.

Other than the D/A converter and your monitoring environment, the soundcard does not affect the digital audio.

The Rosetta would convert the analog signals to digital. Once the signals are digital, your soundcard is only used as a D/A converter in order for you to actually hear this audio. The audio itself is unaffected by the D/A converters.

So techincally other than what you hear. You can mix on any computer with daw. Plugins and all processing happens in the box. When i bounce from 24 bit to 16 bit, that also have nothing to do with the sound card.

Here is my scenaro what you do. I have a recording studio control room, and live room. It is located 15 minutes from my house. I want to do minor mixing at home, ( remove pops breath noise, anything that does not require critical listening) I do not want to lug my fireface 800 back and forth. So i just want to be clear one more time. I can take my project folder home to my laptop with no interface, open the project and do whatever I want to it, bring it back to my studio and will have no loss in quality? I know Bigduggieface pretty much just answered it but i really want to be sure.

You got it !! The card is just in and out. Your processing is all in the digital world of the computer, and, your saved files are the real data transportable to any other sound device.
