Choice between interface or monitors?

I currently use an original Presonus Firepod into Logic 8 to record my synth-based music. I monitor on some old AR-18's, which while very cool are far from accurate.

Now the million dollar question: I can grab either an Apogee Ensemble audio interface, or a pair of KRK RP-8's. The apogee has less preamps than I have now, but as I understand it is a real pro piece of gear. On the other hand, monitors are kind of important.

Which to go with?

Future value is big for me as next year I'll be going to college for Audio Engineering. I hope this rig will serve me in my dorm for playing around with my synths and sequencing junk. I'll be taking my ideas to the school's studios for completion.

I'd stick with the Presonus and go with the monitors. I don't think you'll see a lot of differences in the interfaces....

That's the way that I'm leaning. My only argument against would be that the $1300 apogee interface is certainly of higher quality, and I expect that to translate to reliability. The Firepod disconnects me every so often. If the difference real monitors would make is huge compared to an interface change though, I'll go with the RP-8's.
