I used a 3/8" roundover router bit to put a radius on the edge of the port.
I'm assuming this was due to some kind of understanding of physics / speaker design and not just arbitrary destruction.

Yes, it's a well known loudspeaker design parameter.

Alesis M1 Active monitors. $200. These, along with what CoolDude11 has to say, do the trick.

I own a pair of Yahmaha HS50 and for the price I could not be happier!!! Will probably need a sub later on but these babies has got everything form 50HZ very well covered. Have conpaired them to BX5a and the hs50 win by a mile. bx5 sound really low freq and high mid freq focused, where the hs50 give a beautifull ever response esspecially though the whole mid range. + features to turn it to the room come in very handy.

I too use the Behringer 2031A monitors and have had really good results but I also use one other set of monitors (Alesis Monitor 1) and a cheap mono speaker. Like all equipment or situations the room acts like an instrument and must be tuned or treated to keep the frequencies in check. It's time consuming but worth it!

I am using KRK ROKIT 8" and they translate PERFECT to all other systems I tried. Same bass levels, same feeling, same relationship in the frequency field. Great. I am confident that what levels I put on the instruments at my home mixing will be heard the same at other people's homes, cars and whatever.
