I'm new here and am enjoying reading, (instead of writting).
I wonder if anyone has a comment about a 55 yr old's lack of hearing ability and if they CAN judge freq settings, or should they take up painting. I often can't hear my turn signal indicators on my truck, for example. "Your signal's still on". Maybe I could record for Boomers. I blame it partly on Fender and Black & Decker, but I'll still have to judge the sound with what I hear.

Has anyone heard the Audio Technica ATH AD900 headphones?
How do they compare to the ath m50 for accuracy?

Hi I'm 50 and have a live sound background!!!

But I train myself to hear upper frequencies by continual listening.
Must be working as in Cardiff here I hear some bad pa's and it's not the band!!!

Cheers

I just got rid of my Yorkville YSM1P's with Sub when I got my Adam A7's. I learned the Yorkvilles but what I learned was they were not accurate. I have a treated room and was always "guessing". I thought it was just me. I remixed two problem songs with the Adams and with a few adjustments, I'm happy with the sound and balances. Much different sound and it's hard to tell sometimes if they DO make a difference but when you're done mixing it's like "oh yeah" instead of "hmmm, maybe if I adjust thisthis it'll sound better..."

I'm 47 and I have a way of gaining my highs back. When you go to sleep at night, Put earplugs in. When you get up you will notice things that make high sounds will be more noticable to you. Also you have to realize you are going deaf in certain frequencies and not push the eq in those frequencies. Try not to listen to music really loud as this will also deafen you. If you are running live sound, put on the headphones and not run anything through them. When you are doing something youneed to hear the highs on, take the headphones off. Don't adjust the highs upward as the night goes on. If you see people in the croud cringing you know the highs are a bit much. It sucks going deaf when you do what you do.

I too have been using the Alp 5's and couldn't be more happy with them. Every mix I've listened to outside these monitors seems to translate very well.

I bought these on recommendation from my sales rep at Sweetwater, and he couldn't have been more right on for my budget!

Hi
Nice post, re the loudness, I find it's smaller sound systems that cause
most of the problems here in Cardiff. notably by being pushed beyond there design limits.

As you say they also compensate with the EQ for their damaged hearing which for us makes it worse.
Had to leave many good bands playing due to poor/damaging sound levels.

cheers
Bob

Just a late chime in on the subject. I have in my arsenal a pr. of Alesis M320s... M Audio Bx5as (old Models) & M Audio Bx8a's deluxes (new models), also a M Audio Bx10s Sub...

Now I started with the bx5as then bought the m320s for my laptop, so I can could supposedly mix while at work (NOPE!!). So I love my trusty bx5s sound and the extra hmmp it gave me... I learned the speakers and how to make my music sound like everybody else on them which really took some time... Then I added the Bx10s.. Now In the small 8x9 room that my studio was in (Control Room and Vocal Booth) the bx10s with the bx5a were more than enough and I had no problem (with all my mix comparisons) getting a decent mix. Now Im no longer in the 8x9 room (My new vocal booth) and in a oddly shaped accoustically treated (minimally w/help from auralex room analysis guys) 22x10 room (its 22 x10 on one side and 22x15 on the other go figure!!!) and Im still trying to figure where to place my sub to get it to play nice together. I thought I heard what sounded like a blown left monitor so I got the bx8a deluxes and now Im totally in limbo with the sub and i still hear the sound that made me replace the 5s... (with the 8s on I can barely hear the sub in the room...) Now Im sure when I get the sub figured out Ill be in heaven with my budget setup. And considering that my friend (+20 years recording) who uses Tannoy Reveals (6 pairs) in his studio has now since purchased the bx10s based on how it sounds in my studio, I dont think Im going in the wrong direction..

Oh the M320s... the Usb implematation sucks to me... even though its an interesting concept (usb Audio interface and monitor in one). I think the usb problems stems from vista but since I havent tried it on my XP machine I cant be sure. but I just mainly use them for abing on my main cubase system (A: Bx8a & Bx10s b:M320s) ... Got the 5s on my protools setup (sounds perfect no blown speaker sound go figure!)....

So Ill be spending some time moving the sub 1in at a time with a notepad and a friend on the play button...

Wish Me Luck

Hope it helped....

So far I like my YSM1P'S. I don't have the sub though. Why did you find them inaccurate???
