Unhappy Tascam DP-02CF: only half the CF-card capacity available

Hi guys,

I got the DP-02CF last week in a bundle with a 1GB CF-card.

Worked fine, did some practice runs and everything was sweet. Chucked all work (by reformatting).
Then I put in a 2GB card as I wanted to go recording with one of my bands for the first time; formatted it, checked it's capacity and "Lo and behold!": 1 GB available.

At home, I checked the 1GB card on my PC: only 508 MB available...

The question is: do CF-cards get Korsakov when fed into a DP-02CF? In other words: do CF-cards go all Swiss when forced into a DP-02CF?

Help. Seriously. This hurts on my cash.

Smokey Joe

Try holding down the shift button and then pressing history. This will clean up all the excess stuff that the unit stores. As far as the 1GB card showing 508 MB, well 512 Mb equals 1GB. Anyway, try doing this and it may save you some space.

I'm pretty sure you were joking, but just in case you weren't, 1024 MB equals 1GB.

Quick update, since my original thread got responses after all.

I posted the same question to Tascam USA, who ushered me to Tascam Germany (for reasons unknown, as mine was a general question, i.e. non-country/area specific). From Germany, I got the following answer:
{quote}
The remaining card capacity is reserved for the FAT partition, which is needed for transferring files to a computer via USB.
With cards smaller than 5 GB this FAT partition is automatically formatted to half the card size, to make sure that your entire project can be backed up correctly and in one go.
Only with cards larger than 5 GB you can determine the size of the FAT partition yourself (,but there is still a minimum limit).
{endquote}

So, not a bit is lost after all, it simply got mislaid...

And now, for something completely different:
"Let it rip!"
