Default Tascam DP 02 CF

OK, I just got this recorder and I'm having terrible hum problems. I'd really like to use a direct guitar input ( Collings Winnfield with McIntyre Feather) to avoid household noises, but I have to run it up so high, I'm getting hum. Tried using a preamp which didn't boost the signal at all in the "guitar" mode. I switched to "line/mic" and it boosted the signal AND the noise. If someone could just point me in the right direction on this I sure would appreciate it. I'm ready to send it back and go back to my 424.

Nothing else in the line which might be causing the problem? Leads? Power supply? Jacks?
Otherwise, it could be a faulty machine, in which case you should have a valid warranty claim.

Cleaned it ups pretty much by running the line out from a Genz Benz amp through an ART tube compressor in the "bypass" mode, pretty much using it like a DI. Really cleaned it up a lot and allowed me to boost the signal.
