Check out the Monte Allums website.
He sells mod kits for Boss pedals.
There are sound clips there as well.

I've got a Metal Muff which I like a lot. It's got a great sound that can be adjusted with 5 different knobs. Great for heavy metal.

I'm pretty sold on the trying the Fulltone '70 fuzz. I emailed a online rep about my choices and haven't heard anything back. I think it's use is specific, though, and not a all-a-rounder.
