Singers with good mic technique using a good mic are the first things you need. If you can create clarity while recording you'll get the best sound. If you have to do it after the fact then a wide shallow EQ boost in the 2-4k range can be helpful. Cutting out some of the low mids can also open things up. Compression can even out the dynamics. Combined with riding the faders you can play the dynamics so that every word in a phrase comes through (though this can end up sounding a bit artificial in acappella arrangements).

Check out the Stillwell Audio plugins. They sound great and you can get free demo version. If you decide to get them they are really quite affordable.

Once you get your vocals on tape, try this in the following order....
PSP Vintage ****er $149.00
Sonnox Oxford EQ $315.00
EMI TG12413 $335.00

You can download demos for these three plugins. Hope this helps.
