Default Recording in garage band, mixing and mastering in Logic Pro 8?

From what ive done so far..the quality seems to suffer when its transferred from program to program.....is this just me?

It seems like Soundtrack Pro that came with Logic has better audio encryption or something because i can record EXTREMELY crisp songs off of it....

let me know what you guys think

I've experimented with the same thing. I like both Logic and SoundTrack, but there's too much latency for studio work. I've recorded in GarageBand then exported the clips to either Logic or ST for effects and sweetening, then back to GB. It works pretty well for me. But I wish I could record in Logic or ST.

I think GB compresses the signal. I've recorded identical tracks and the GB files are always smaller than either Logic or ST.

If you use Garage Band's "Export Song to Disk" option and uncheck the "Compress" box you should end up with a full CD quality 16bit aiff file.

Do you mean you're loading the gband session in logic, or the finished audio file?
If you load the gband session it, it may sound different if you have 'all' checked in your latency preferences.
If your loading in the finished audio file, i can't imagine why it would sound different, unless you're loading in an mp3 version, in which case logic resamples it to match the session settings.
Have you tried loading it into waveburner?

What I plan to do is export each individual track to Logic...but after playing around with GB's "au" filters I may be able to do all the work in GarageBand.

There was a latency issue recording with Logic. I'm on a Mini Mac using a Tapco "Link" for the input.

Thanks for the reply. This still a work in progress.

You shouldn't have to go to the trouble of exporting each track to logic- you can open the gb session in logic as if it were a logic session, and the edits/fx and instruments load in correctly.
There's a guy putting out free au plugins under the moniker 'airwindows' and there are some really great ones for using in garage band! I can't post the link (i'm writing this on a phone), but it should be easy to find.
Is your mini a g4 or intel? I have an early intel macbook, not the fastest for sure, and using the low-latency button i can set my audio interface to use 128 samples without choking the cpu.

Well thats slightly higher spec than mine (I use a 2.4 macbook pro) and I have literally no noticeable latency whatsoever no matter what I do.

I can run a few different guitar rig 3's in logic, different in's and out's on high quality. 512 samples and its still, for all intensive purposes, latency free.

You should have no problems with a good interface setup right.

Since I posted that I've done some research and it looks like ti IO box could be the issue. We're using a Tapco "link"? that a friend gave me.

I'd like to move up to something that's faster and maybe one that will let record 6-8 tracks simultaneously, (can you do that in Logic and/or GarageBand?)

I think that tapco is not usb 2.0, so that might explain the latency issues.

Look at either USB 2.0, or even better, firewire.

Just learn to record in logic. There's literally no reason to record in GB. You can record as many the hell tracks you want (not in GB!).
