Smile Question about using logic with alesis sr 18

I'm new here, greetings all!

I currently use a line 6 toneport kb37 as an interface for logic studio / ableton live, and I recently obtained an alesis sr 18 drum machine that I was hoping to use in my recordings.

Forgive me if I come off as a complete n00b, but is it possible to record the source from the alesis sr 18 if I select a new track with the option "external midi?" When I select my alesis sr 18 module as the input (using an edirol um-1 usb to midi cable), I can see that the levels are moving in the software's mixing area in accordance with the drum machine when I set it to play. However, I'm unable to set the output to the master mix so that it can be heard in my monitors.

I asked ableton support this question and they told me that the module can only be used as a controller for onboard electronic instruments, and that if I wanted to record the source from the drum machine, I'd have to plug it into my line 6 toneport interface as if it were a normal audio instrument, via a quarter inch cable.

It seems a bit silly to me that this would be the ONLY way to record the instrument, but it's also possible I don't quite know what I'm talking about.

Is it possible to record through the midi? If so, how??

Thanks!

No. Not that I know of. You want to record the source sounds (your alesis) as audio, and audio is not midi.
