Cool newbie trying to use garageband

I'm very new to using computers, I have a new imac desktop. My mic goes into a yamaha MG8/2cx mixer which is connected to the computer with a UF0202 interface. My issue is ; when I play my harmonica (recording into garageband) I can't hear the playback unless I unplug the interface from the computer. Also, while recording, I can't hear what I'm playing through the headphones unless I turn the gain and volume on whatever channel I use to max. Even so; the playback can barely be heard through the computer speakers but any loops I use comes through loud and clear. I don't think the gain should be that high. This is my first attempt at recording so I'm not sure of anything.

In GB when you have enabled a "real instrument track" have you brought the recording level up? This is located in the track options on the right side.

I would imagine that if you get any usable signal through that interface you will be lucky. It was designed to get vinyl onto your computer, not for microphone recording. I would strongly recommend a decent interface if you really want to get into recording. what mic are you using?

Check your preferences in garageband and in your audio midi setup to make sure they are correct.

Your imac will be a great little computer if you can hang in there long enough to figure it out.

Hey! Thanks! I knew the volume level would be something simple, I feel kinda silly now. My mic is a no name brand the music store recommended as a budget mic.(50 bucks). I have to rethink the order in which I purchase gear. My original total budget of $3200 won't go very far in Aust. I think I will get rid of the MG8/2 mixer and uf0202interface. I should not have to unplug the interface to hear playback. I'll do some more research before I decide what to replace them with. A really good harmonica mic. is one of my next purchases. Thanks again....

ha! sometimes it is the simplest things! Your budget will go far if you do it right. My motu ultralite is great, if you don't require more than two inputs, or if you do down the road, you can add outboard mic pre's. Add a decent condenser mic like the studio projects b1, and a mic for your harmonica and you're golden. A decent set of monitors and some cables...should all be less than a grand. If you search craigslist, you'll find some deals.
Take the time to really learn garageband and then if you are digging it you could jump up to Logic Express or Logic.

One more thing...if you're running snow leopard you should check interfaces for compatability, and you might not want to jump into an ultralite right away. Musician's friend has the firebox on sale for $199 right now. I am not sure how well they work with mac's, you'd have to research that.

Just to get an idea of what it's like here, Motu ultralite Mk3 the lowest price I found was $979. I have to decide between usb or firewire. I've heard firewire puts less strain on a computer; is this true?

Whew that's twice the price! Where are you? there must be a better alternative for you than the motu. I have no facts to back this up, but I've always heard firewire was better. Many will argue with that. I use firewire successfully.

HI! again; I'm in Perth, West Australia
the most isolated capital city in the world. Does anyone know if the personus firebox($359) is better gear than the m-audio firewire 410($571)? also can they be used with a real mixer; (knobs, faders, buttons). If I use a yamaha MO8 synthesizer will I need an interface at all?
