I'm a beginner to computer recording so this might seem like a dumb question, but where and how do you mix down. Let's say I'm doing a mix that requires several fader moves or other adjustments during the song, when I used to mix down with tape I would send the multi tracks to a 2 track stereo tape machine on the fly. How do I save this particular mix to my computer or an external drive? What I am trying to say is, how can I mix to the place I want to save it to in real time? Hope this was clear. Any help would be appreciated.

You need to learn automation. Here is a video. YouTube Quicktips: Automation I also highly recommend the videos at macprovideo or grooveboxmusic

If you want to "ride the faders" you can but you need to have a digital mixer connected to your computer via USB or FireWire. Then you can use automation (writing, touching) to programme the mixdown and if your mixer's got motorised sliders, every time you playback using the "read" setting on automation, the faders will set themselves to the positions you used during your real time mixing. I may have explained that losely and quickly but I hope you get the idea. |
