Default midi input with GarageBand

Hey,

OK, so I am recording with GarageBand on my Mac Book Pro, I have a M-Audio fast track pro to interface between my keyboard. I am also using Native Instruments Massive.

When I hook my keyboard up to the Fast track pro with quarter inch cables I am able to record in GB fine. But when I hook up a midi cable between the key board and fast track pro using massive as the synth then I am unable to record sound.

Any idea, what I could be doing wrong? I am new to all of this so if I left out some crucial info please let me know.

Thanks

I don't know GB, but usually this happens when the track isn't initialized as a MIDI track. MIDI isn't audio, but just controller codes. Once you get the codes recorded, you can concentrate on getting the VST to convert them to sound.

So, usually you will have a audio "device" like ASIO for Fast Track Pro, and then under a MIDI track that will change to something like Fast Track Pro MIDI in, and another one for out.

I'm not familiar with "Native Instruments Massive" but are you actually producing an audio sound which you want to record?

If so, you'll have to set up an audio track rather than a MIDI track to record it onto.

The other possible problem is that MIDI recordings (if it is MIDI that you're trying to record) can't be used to control external MIDI instruments in Garageband. They'll only play internal instruments.

I had to get Logic rather than relying on Garageband because of this exact problem.
