Default mic pres

I am just getting into home recording and I have a ton of questions. I am
going to use LOGIC PRO 8 and an M-AUDIO NRV 10 mixer with a firewire
connection into a MAC BOOK. Can anyone tell me how the mic pres on the
NRV 10 would stack up against a stand alone mic pre such as the ART MPA II
or the STYDIO PROJECTS VTB -1? If I use a stand alone mic pre, does it's
output go thru the mic pre on the NRV-10 or does the signal get into the DAW
by some other means. This may sound like a stupid question, but I am an
absolute beginner at this and I have no idea how to best results.

Since you're just starting, I would use the mic pre's on the m audio, and then see if you need anything else. The external pre's you have listed are probably about the same as the m-audio's, so I doubt you would hear a great improvement. An external pre would go into an analog in on your interface, bypassing the interfaces mic pre.

To second: "I'm just getting started" and "Which preamp should I buy" mutually exclusive ideas. Wait until you know what you're doing. "Just getting started" also translates to "I don't have the skill (or microphone collection) to realize the benefit of an external preamp". No personal, mind you.
