Default Whats Best????

I'm trying to record from a Yamaha DTXpress4 using Audacity on my sony vaio laptop. Ok do i plug kit into mixing desk then send to laptop using the mic input in laptop or do I send a midi signal from drum kit through roland midi interface straight to usb on laptop. I just want a basic but clear sounding recording. I tried using usb input but audacity didnt seem to pick up any sounds being sent.
